are in boston. he will also campaign in ohio and pennsylvania, a state that hasn't voted for a republican presidential nominee since george bush senior, back in '88. what does that tell you? is that a hail mary backup in case he loses ohio or just worth a try since he's in the neighborhood or does he think he really has a chance? >> it depends on who you ask, anderson. clearly the polls have tightened up in pennsylvania. they took a look at it, when you talk to the folks in the romney campaign they say listen, we have spent the money, we need to spend in all these battleground states that john was talking about. all of our resources that we can put in there are there. we are up on the air as much as we can be. there's no more room for ads on tv in all these battleground states and they took a look at pennsylvania and said first of all, it's right next door to ohio so not like they have to go across the country to go there. plus more than 90% of pennsylvanians will vote on election day. there's no early voting in pennsylvania. absentees, you have to meet a certain criteria so the vast majo

and is live in boston now. we are already seeing some monday morning quarterbacking. what a shock. >> sure. when a party loses, this is what happens. it happened back in 2008 when john mccain lost. the republic party looked close at itself and now it's doing the same thing in the wake of mitt romney's defeat. it doesn't take much to understand why look at the numbers in key constituencies where republicans were facing uphill climb mr. romney did not do particularly well he got blown out with latino voters. mr. obama beating mr. romney with latino voters. women's vote. disadvantage for the g.o.p. continues. there you see again mr. obama with a commanding advantage over mr. romney. and lastly the youth vote. mitt romney's campaign didn't spend a lot of time courting these constituencies tried on occasions but it wasn't the overall focus of how they did it as opposed to the president's campaign which microtargetted. county by county, neighborhood by neighborhood. street by street and picked up these votes. and as a consequence. in the last time back four years ago republic party moved with th

40. boston 45 degrees. you get out towards chicago, they were at 45 as well. not a lot of warm air. we have a few shots that are warmer than normal but not nearly at many as we saw last week. tampa at 67 degrees. phoenix at 882. most of the country starting to trpped down into a cooler and also very quiet weather pattern for the time being. here is where temperatures stand at this hour. still 28 degrees at manassas. we have not dropped too much there. frederick, you have, though, down to 28 degrees. gait thusburg at 30, winchester at 30. i don't think it's going to get too much colder than this because we did have a deck of clouds coming in. that should protect us from getting too much older. you can see from the northwest, 32, down in south raleigh, 41. now, these are not the biggest clouds that we have seen and i don't believe they'll produce any kind of precipitation. they might be up there to protect some of these areas from getting colder. watching the beginning of the storm system that will move over to the coast. i know you hear the word coastal and you think, what's up with

, around the corner. us bank. ♪ neil: all right. this is from the headquarters in boston, massachusetts. they're worried, but they're not giving up hope. obviously it's still a close race. listed look at the cave -- electoral tally as a stance. right now it is even. but the reason why we say it is primitive, it's even. the next round of those states at 11:00 p.m. are california, hawaii, idaho, oregon, and washington. those are all states that the president is expected to win. that would be about 70 -- actually 82 electoral votes that he could pick up in the 11:00 p.m. hour or shortly thereafter. so now your up to about 245. i have not even counted ohio where he is leading, not prohibitively, but leading command that would bring you to 263, within seven of winning the 270 you need. and then you understand that if your mitt romney you have to when virtually every single other state. that's what we mean by prohibitive math. looking at that same math. what do you think? >> i think it looks bleak for the republicans. i am not happy about it, but i am praying. i have all my fingers and toes c

. and nbc has the president up by 6 points. got all that? joining us now from boston, david. he directs polling. >> he want to run it down from your point of view. you have canvassed the whole country, know what's going on. ohio, how do you see it? >> i see it really close. if you look at the last four polls, it's one point. 1 through 8 the poll was average four to five points. what we look at is the head-to-head number. the last three consecutive polls, excluding the two you mentioned were at 48. that's a sign of vulnerability. obviously you have seven candidates on the ballot. i think those polls that had the plus four, plus five overstated obama's support because they overcounting a strong democratic county, and they had a party differential in those polls of democrats with an 8 point advantage party affiliation. >> so you see romney momentum in ohio? >> i see romney strong enough to be within a point. and that's exactly where the last four polls showed him. >> so the governor has a very, very -- he has a very good chance in ohio. how about florida? >> i don't think so. as we talked
